About GERALD CASH BSc Hons
There are many different ‘Therapies’. For example, Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychoanalysis, Transactional Analysis, Existentialism and many more and each one is valuable in its own way. People have different ways of learning, some like to read, some like to listen to a teacher and some like to learn ‘hands on’, in other words, we are all different. Counselling is learning about ourselves and just as with any other form of learning, we each have our own preferred way. For this reason I believe it is more beneficial to the client if the style of therapy used meets the needs of the client. This way of working is called ‘Integrative’ and is my preferred way of working.
My practice is in Paignton. I have experience of working with alcohol addiction, depression, anxiety, OCD, phobias, bereavement, domestice abuse and violence, trauma, and with general mental health problems.
I have experience of working with individuals, couples, families and children.
My university research was into domestic violence and abuse with particular reference to male victims and their families.
Good friends can often be a wonderful support, but sometimes they may not seem to understand what you are saying, or you may feel ‘silly’ talking about the kind of things that are worrying you.
Counselling is confidential and offers a safe place to be yourself, be accepted for who you are and to work on yourself with another. No one will laugh at you, question what you are worried about, or tell you what to do.
My training, work experience and any achievement
I studied at the University of East London and hold a BSc (Hons) degree in Integrative Counselling. This means I have studied a variety of different therapies and have been trained to analyse clients’ presenting issues from a wide variety of approaches which enables a greater depth of understanding. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and therefore abide by their code of conduct and ethics.
I have experience of working with general mental health problems, counselling children as young as 7 years old and families in schools, addictions, counselling terminally ill in hospital and their family and have served on the committee of the Forensic Therapists Association.
I run CPD sessions on recognising and working with victims of domestic violence and abuse and their families, with particular reference to the male victim and the bias which he may encounter when seeking help and support.
Further Information
Domestic Violence Perpetrator Programme (DVPP)
It is usually assumed that domestic violence is perpetrated by the male, but this is not so. Research studies show clearly that females are also perpetrators in domestic situations. This is a Programme which will work with both male and female perpetrators. The problem is not gender specific.
Well over half of all domestic violence is reciprocal, yet our culture looks for one aggressor and one victim. The result is to separate the couple and keep them apart, ending the relationship. It may be that with the correct help, the relationship could have been saved and peace restored to the family.
Separating the couple has an affect on any children involved and may lead to one parent not seeing his or her child or children for many months, if at all. Often the forced separation results in animosity and the non-resident parent then enacts revenge on his or her ex by stopping the contact, even where there is a Child Arrangements Order in place.
Help and support is needed for the victim, the aggressor and the children involved. However, so often the perpetrator is required to attend a DVPP course and the victim recieves support yes, but without helping to find out what led that victim to become a victim in the first place. This is not victim blaming as some would claim, it is to avoid the same pattern from happening in the next relationship.
Of course, there are cases where it would not be appropriate for the couple to come into contact and separation is the only resolution to an aggressive relationship, but this is not so in every case and it still remains essential for both parties to recieve appropriate support to avoid repetition of behaviour patterns in futiure relationships.
